Construction and demolition sites produce a wide range of materials, and each requires a different handling and disposal route. Understanding those categories is the first step to building an effective waste management plan.

Inert waste

Concrete, bricks, tiles, soil, and aggregates (collectively classified as inert waste) typically account for the largest share of volume on a construction or demolition site. Much of this material can be processed into secondary aggregate for reuse, significantly reducing what goes to landfill and cutting disposal costs.

Non-inert waste

Timber, metals, plastics, plasterboard, and packaging all fall into the non-inert category. These materials have a recoverable fraction and a compliant disposal route. Metals achieve near-100% recovery rates. Plasterboard must be kept separate from other waste streams due to its sulphate content and requires a dedicated recycling route.

Hazardous waste

Asbestos-containing materials, contaminated soil, paints, solvents, and oils are classified as hazardous and must be handled, transported, and disposed of by a licensed contractor. Every business that produces or handles waste has a legal duty of care under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. For construction sites, this means using licensed waste carriers, completing waste transfer notes for each consignment, and keeping those records for a minimum of two years.
