Frequently asked questions
How can retail stores reduce waste at the source?
Retail stores can minimise waste by reviewing packaging choices, implementing reusable containers, monitoring stock levels to reduce food waste, and training staff on proper waste segregation practices. Recycling Lives Services consultants can advise on tailored waste reduction strategies and monitor their impact through our online portal.
What is a retail waste management plan?
A retail waste management plan is a structured approach to handling all waste streams generated by a retail operation. It sets out which waste types are produced, how each is segregated, the collection schedule for each stream, and how performance is reported. Recycling Lives Services develops tailored plans for retail clients, covering everything from everyday cardboard recycling to specialist streams such as WEEE and hazardous materials.
Do retail businesses have to separate their waste under the new recycling rules?
Yes. Under the Simpler Recycling regulations introduced from March 2025, retail businesses in England with ten or more full-time equivalent employees must separate food waste and dry recyclables from general waste for collection. Smaller businesses must comply by March 2027. Failure to do so can result in enforcement action and fines.
What retail waste streams do you collect and recycle?
We collect and recycle cardboard, paper, plastic film, food waste, general waste, WEEE, hazardous materials and packaging. For retailers with packaging compliance obligations under the Extended Producer Responsibility regulations, our compliance consultancy team can advise on producer responsibility requirements alongside your physical waste management.
What happens to retail waste after collection?
All waste collected by Recycling Lives Services follows a documented, compliant route. Cardboard and plastics are recycled through closed-loop systems, food waste is composted or converted into energy, and hazardous or electronic waste is treated in accordance with Environment Agency regulations. Nothing is sent to landfill unless unavoidable.
How does working with Recycling Lives Services support our ESG reporting?
Our online portal provides real-time reporting on waste volumes, diversion rates and carbon impact across all your sites. Every contract also generates verified social value through our partnership with Recycling Lives Charity. We can provide the data and documentation your team needs to report against Net Zero targets or supply chain ESG requirements.
Can you manage retail waste collection across multiple stores?
Yes. Recycling Lives Services consolidates retail waste collection across multiple sites under a single supplier agreement. All sites follow the same service specification, and reporting is aggregated across your estate so you can track recycling rates, diversion data and carbon impact in one place.
