How our battery compliance scheme can help your business

Our comprehensive suite of services is designed to help battery producers navigate the complex regulatory environment, ensuring both compliance and sustainability. By offering tailored solutions, strategic evidence contributions, and educational initiatives, we make compliance easier and more effective.

Chemistry Specific Producer Obligations: We go beyond the reliance on regulatory loopholes and simple reporting, by actively supporting battery producers in enhancing their compliance. Using evidence specific to the chemistry type of batteries placed on the market, we help our clients meet recycling and collection targets. This chemistry specific driven approach ensures that each producer’s unique environmental impact is accurately reflected, enabling them to meet current and future regulatory requirements in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Own-Brand Evidence Contribution: Our service includes a commitment to provide a percentage of ‘own-brand’ evidence to producers, ensuring that their environmental contributions are further recognised. This supports brand transparency and strengthens sustainability credentials, helping producers not only comply with regulatory demands but also enhance their ESG credentials.

Increased Engagement & Education: We believe that knowledge is power. To this end, we foster enhanced producer and consumer engagement through targeted education initiatives. We provide workshops, webinars, and informational materials that focus on current industry challenges, regulatory pitfalls, and what needs to change. By increasing awareness of the issues and evolving regulations, we help both producers and consumers navigate the complexities of battery producer compliance more effectively.

Proven Success: We are committed to delivering results. Through ongoing monitoring and feedback, we demonstrate that our tailored approach works. With a proven track record of successfully helping producers comply with environmental regulations, we ensure that our clients stay ahead of industry shifts, reduce their environmental footprint, and meet all compliance requirements efficiently.

Frequently asked questions about battery compliance in the UK

What is battery compliance?
Battery compliance is simply where manufacturers, importers and/or distributors of batteries, need to follow a set of requirements that allow them to legally carry out their business function.
I produce or sell products with batteries – what should I do?
Producers that place more than 1 tonne of portable batteries onto the UK market must register with a UK battery compliance scheme (we can help you ensure you’re compliant and fill out your data submission to the best of your ability), and pay a share towards the costs of battery recycling. Producers that place 1 tonne or less of portable batteries onto the UK market must instead register with the Environment Agency and complete an annual data submission detailing the amount of batteries placed onto the UK market. Again, this is something we can help with to ensure you are fully compliant with UK laws and regulations.
I am a battery distributor – what should I do?
You’ll need to offer some form of battery collection for your customers. This can be an in-store portable battery collection service. This must also be advertised at all point-of-sale areas.
How much is battery compliance in the UK?
The fee is determined and fixed once you’re happy with the schedule of work. You’ll have a compliance scheme membership fee, as well as the Environment Agency Registration fee, plus a fixed battery rate.
Do I need to follow WEEE regulations?
If you also sell electronics or electronics powered by batteries, you’ll also need to ensure you are WEEE compliant. Visit our WEEE compliance page for more information.
